Lectoure is one of the oldest cities in the Gers, as evidenced by numerous Gallic and Gallo-Roman remains. If the city was initially spread out in the plain, it ended up migrating on a vast limestone spur, dominating the Gers plain, and giving it its proud silhouette, recognizable among thousands. The light-colored stone of the 17th and 18th century buildings gives the old town a homogeneity and a charm unequalled in the region. The historical heritage of Lectoure is very rich, and the visit will lead you from the bastion to the old castle of the counts of Armagnac, passing by the cathedral, the old bishop's palace, the market hall or the Diane fountain. South of the cathedral, the panorama on the valleys of Gers from the ramparts is exceptional. The Eugène-Camoreyt archaeological museum has an important collection of Gallo-Roman taurobolic altars and the museum of sacred art houses a rich collection of religious objects. But Lectoure is much more than a museum town. It is a lively city, which has managed to combine the traditions of the past with cultural modernity. A major stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, Lectoure continues its ancient vocation of welcoming pilgrims, and if you are not part of the adventure yourself, there is no doubt that you will come across many of them, exhausted by their last climb to the city, but dazzled by its beauty. The city also hosts an art center dedicated to photography, which organizes the festival of the Photographic Summer.
