With 69 inhabitants, it is one of the least populated villages in the area. On the heights of Savès, it aligns the hamlets at 300 m of altitude. Situated near the Marcaoue, a tributary of the Gimone, its origins go back to the Counts of Toulouse. In 1249, in Toulouse, Guillaume de Gaujac lends oath to the French Royalty and to the heir of the last Raymond, count of Toulouse with the counts of Isle Jourdain, of Astarac and Comminges. Gaujac has its famous characters. Jacques Gauthe (1939-2007), saxophonist and clarinettist of Dixieland jazz, known worldwide, was born in Gaujac and died in Gaujac after a brilliant career in New Orleans. The world-famous ornithologist and wildlife artist Hermann Heinzel lives in Gaujac. The picnic tables of the site of the Virgin benefit from a very beautiful point of view on the Pyrenees; true haven of peace, at the exit of the wood of Gaujac, for the hikers who take this pedestrian course. Nearby, the boulodrome will be able to entertain the most active players. For the anecdote, you should know that for a long time the legend of a treasure hidden under a tumulus on the site of the Virgin made the inhabitants dream... until the demolition of the tumulus in the 70s when all hopes were dashed. You can fish (with a fishing card) in the lowlands, at the lake of Marcaoue which extends over 24 ha on the communes of Gaujac, Pellefigue, Sabaillan and Simorre. Finally, you should know that the village festival takes place on the3rd Saturday of September. You should also know that Gaujac is on a Geocaching route. This one starts from the nearby village of Montamat and ends in Gaujac. On your smartphone!
