The name comes from the Latin stagnum, meaning pond, but was actually given to the small river that flows below the village. Estang was detached in 1368 by Charles V in favor of Jean I, Count of Armagnac. Its heritage suffered considerably during the Wars of Religion and the French Revolution. The parish church and its annex Saint-Martial were looted and burned. All that remains of the four former churches is Notre-Dame d'Estang, a 12th-century Romanesque gem. The Estang bullring is also listed as a Monument Historique. Its fully-covered wooden stands are remarkable.
