Founded between 1295 and 1304 by Henri II and Bernard d'Armagnac, the town has retained some of its fortifications and the original bastide layout of its right-angled streets: five parallel to the river and five cross streets. The houses have a half-rustic, half-citadine appearance, built of red sandstone. The church of Saint-Barthélémy and the town hall have Greek-style pediments, a style that was popular during the Enlightenment. The bell tower of the church, added around 1900 without any regard for the original style, makes the beautiful classical building look out of place. The castle of La Guizardie and its square tower (15th century) dominate the village.
