If Tournemire, a railway town, has lost its former splendor that symbolized its bustling station, its marquee above the platforms, its depot of beautiful steam engines... Nevertheless, it keeps its charm of a small village - a little more than 400 inhabitants - which sees its two trains Béziers/Paris and its shuttles between Béziers and Millau passing daily. Located between the combalou of Roquefort and the plateau of Larzac, Tournemire is a peaceful and sunny village, whose major point of attraction is the circus of Brias by which you can reach the plateau of Larzac on foot - a short hike of 1h30. You can reach it by the center of the village - towards the post office or towards the convent - or by extending the road by car towards the Viala-du-Pas-de-Jaux. When you reach the Croix de Crépounac, you can see the cirque, overhanging Tournemire and Roquefort, with a breathtaking view of the valley. The commune is also known as the site of the discovery, in 1986, of a fossilized skeleton of a plesiosaurus 180 million years old. It was found on its gray marl - a model is on display at the town hall, the original is in the Millau museum. The convent of the Sisters of Notre-Dame from the 19th century (now privately owned) and the church from the 18th-19th century are also part of the heritage of the village. But Tournemire is still famous for its festivals: the 14th of July flea market with more than 300 exhibitors, with its exhibition of old cars and spare parts - one of the most popular events in South Aveyron.
