Originally, the place was called Bonalde, transformed over time into Bonneval. The abbey was founded in 1147 at the request of the bishop of Cahors who had a vision at this place. Built by Cistercian monks, it was one of the richest abbeys in Rouergue until the Revolution. Left abandoned for nearly a century, it was restored in 1875 when the sisters of Maubec settled there. Following the rule of Saint-Benoît, they live by working with their hands. Since then, Bonneval Abbey has become as well known for its heritage as for its famous chocolate factory, whose pralines, bars and other products help finance the community's work.
