This small village was built in the valley of the Dourbie river, which is crossed by the two ancient bridges. The oldest bridge was built on a single arch thrown high above the river in the 13th century, the most recent one accompanied the development of the community in the 18th century. Saint-Jean-du-Bruel was at the heart of the Wars of Religion but the two churches ended up living together in harmony and each kept its own church building. The centre of the village has been restored and has beautiful facades. The covered market, an 18th century building, must have resounded with the cries of the chestnut merchants who collected chestnuts in the area and the barrel makers, of which the town had become a speciality.
