This county town has prospered over the years, thanks in particular to the cultivation of potatoes, for which it is renowned for the quality of its plants. The village dates back to the 11th century, with the arrival of the Benedictine monks of Saint-Martial. However, the presence of a Gallo-Roman fountain and the remains discovered nearby bear witness to an even earlier activity... Stroll through the narrow streets that criss-cross Rieupeyroux. You'll see the consuls' house, the judge's house and the present-day library, all of which have preserved their original doors and restored half-timbering. Three fountains supply water to the village, including the Griffoul fountain, while at the bottom of the village, near the church, you can see a judiciously preserved section of the ancient city wall. The church of Saint-Martial (11th-16th centuries) boasts an octagonal bell tower and a side porch with oratory. It has three naves with two pillars, and has preserved its fine stained-glass windows. The large bone next to the entrance is probably a whale bone, but legend has it that it is the shoulder blade of some giant, Samson or Gargantua, who helped the villagers build the church... Close to the village, at 804 m, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste chapel dominates the landscape. The chapel is often closed, but the climb is well worth the detour: the view from Cantal to the Pyrenees is breathtaking. An orientation table helps you find your way around the vast panorama, even if a reservoir installed near the chapel obscures part of the view.
