This town, located in the far north of the département at an altitude of 800 m, looks towards the Cantal. Of course, the proximity and ease of access to the Cantal have a lot to do with this, but the town's roots are not irrelevant either. Mur-de-Barrez was part of the province of Carladez, whose capital was Carlat, a Cantalien village dominated by a powerful fortress. In 1643, Carladez was given by the King of France to the Grimaldis, who still reign over the Rock of Monaco! The little village now boasts its own Place de Monaco and Grimaldi Tower, one of the three permanently guarded city gates.
