Halfway between Nant and Millau, the village of La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite was built in tiers, so narrow are the banks of the Dourbie between the Larzac and Causse Noir rock faces. The road through the gorges crosses the narrow lane that jumps over the river on a small stone bridge, winding through rocky outcrops and bushes to link the two plateaus. The scene is set: the town hall, a mill tastefully converted into a handsome residence, a friendly bistro, a family-run hotel, a half-shaded pebble beach, a small square hosting a few festive evenings in summer, and, dominating the village, the classic 17th-century château.
