A key stopover on the famous GR65 pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, Espalion lies between the causse and the mountains, and guards the entrance to the Lot gorges that lead up to Estaing. The Pont Vieux, like many of the monuments here, is built of pink sandstone. It has been modified and enlarged over the centuries, but retains its charm and authenticity. Higher up, the Vieux Palais, built in 1572, boasts strange Renaissance architecture, with its "pepperpot" tower, as if glued to the walls, and curious perspectives. To fully appreciate all these treasures, you need to go to the Foirail and follow the river.
