The town's history is linked to that of the mine and its founder, Duke Élie Decazes (1780-1860), who was a minister of King Louis XVIII and, above all, created the Société des Houillères et Fonderies de l'Aveyron in 1826. The town has the typical appearance of an industrial city, sprawling alongside its factories. In the center stands the church, built on the initiative of Gracchus Cabrol, the mine manager, in 1847, following the model of the one in Genoa. The bell tower was completed in 1873, twelve years after its consecration. Beyond the industrial aspect, it is also a major venue for cultural events, with the Mines de jazz festival.
