Originally built around 1120 by Adalard, lord of Flanders and pilgrim, as a refuge from brigands on the road to Santiago de Compostela, the little hamlet, lost in the middle of nature, lies close to the remains of the ancient dômerie d'Aubrac (monastery whose abbot had the title of dom). The 12th-century church tower contains the Maria bell, also known as the "bell of the lost", which, when rung, served as a landmark for travelers lost in the snow and fog. Condom-d'Aubrac is a rural commune located in a mid-mountain area within the Aubrac Regional Nature Park, and today has a population of just over 300.
