The castle clings to a promontory overlooking the Muze valley. This easily defensible observation post was chosen by the Count of Toulouse who built a fortified house there in the 10th century. Its name of Castelnau de Lévezou became Castelnau Pégayrols, like the name of the family who bought it in the 18th century. Today it is still a private property, surrounded by solid walls, whose vaulted rooms from the medieval period have been preserved. The village as a whole is worth a visit; it was built tightly around the castle, with only narrow alleys between the brown and grey stone houses. On the central square, you will find the church of Saint-Martin which was built in the 11th century to house a massive priory, dominated by a bell tower. It is decorated with a flamboyant altarpiece. The visit goes down to the creek, then out and towards the church of Notre-Dame, a Romanesque construction, which has preserved frescoes from the 17th century representing angel musicians. The building hosts many cultural events (exhibitions, shows...) and musical events (concerts) in its heart. The village also shines by its medieval hydraulic system, unique in the world, which fulfilled four types of functions: military (supply of the castle's cistern), civil (supply of running water to the village), agricultural (irrigation of the land) and industrial (operation of four mills to produce oil and flour - food and for livestock)
