From the confluence of the Ariège and Vicdessos rivers to the borders of Spain and Andorra lie the Tarascon, Vicdessos and Auzat valleys, where 3,000-meter peaks culminate. Hundreds of caves dot the region. These caves have been instrumental in the development of prehistoric civilizations. The caves of Niaux, La Vache and Bedeilhac still bear witness to this today. The once fortified town of Tarascon-sur-Ariège has developed around its markets and fairs since the Middle Ages. The steep streets are home to picturesque houses, while the Casteilla and Saint-Michel towers dominate the ensemble.
