From the 6th century until the French Revolution, the bishops of the Couserans took up residence in Saint-Lizier, building the sumptuous "Bishop's Palace" which can still be seen today and serves as the Ariège departmental museum. The town, founded by the Romans, is listed as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages and is one of the Grands Sites de Midi-Pyrénées. The scenery and mountain views are breathtaking. All this makes Saint-Lizier an essential stop-off point when discovering the Ariège region. Since 1998, its main monuments have been listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites.
