Founded in 1273, this bastide was entirely rebuilt after the fire that the Germans set on August 21, 1944. Rimont was destroyed by the flames of the fires set by an enemy column which tried to escape from the stranglehold of the Allied armies landed on August 15 in Provence and the strong interior Ariège Resistance. The village and its surroundings, several farms and hamlets were almost completely burned down: 236 buildings destroyed, including 152 houses. During these two days, 13 civilians and a dozen maquisards were killed or summarily executed. Rimont thus became a martyr village of the Ariège.
