The reputation of Niaux and its cave extends beyond our borders, thanks to the sheer size of its rooms and the variety of its decorations. Along with Altamira and Lascaux, it is one of the most beautiful prehistoric caves in the world. The underground cathedral, located 1 kilometer from the cave entrance, was frequented during the Magdalenian period (12,000 to 11,000 BC). The Salon Noir reveals paintings dating back 140 centuries. Depicted are horses, a deer, ibex and, above all, bison, some with enigmatic signs on their flanks. The cave and its Salon Noir remain one of the world's most important prehistoric sites.
