Many villages in France have the same name as this village with often the same writing. Since 2021 and a decree of the Prime Minister, Montgaillard l'ariégeoise has become Montgailhard with an H. The small village of 1,500 inhabitants is in the suburbs of Foix. It is visually famous for the "sugar loaf" that dominates it. This place was the site of the castle of Montgrenier which was besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1217 and razed in 1638. Montgailhard is famous for its Catalan-style forge built during the French Revolution and admirably rehabilitated within the bucolic and historical park of the Forges de Pyrène, an unforgettable village.
