A picturesque village, Sorde lies at the foot of a hillside on the right bank of the Gave d'Oloron. At the foot of a cliff, several prehistoric sites, in particular the Duruthy shelter, bear witness to the very early presence of man in the region. Numerous remarkable Magdalenian finds have been unearthed here. These are now on display at the departmental heritage center at Arthous Abbey in Hastingues. The town grew up around a Benedictine abbey built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa, which boasted thermal baths and a fine collection of 4th-century mosaics. Well worth a visit!
