The name of the city is linked to the family of Lévis since the 13th century. In 1209, Guy de Lévis, lieutenant of the crusader leader Simon de Montfort, received the fiefdom of Mirepoix to which the family name was henceforth associated. In 1289, the city was washed away by a flood and rebuilt on the left bank of the Hers according to a checkerboard plan. Since this year, the medieval bastide is part of the "Grands Sites de Midi-Pyrénées" and classified as a "Site Patrimonial Remarquable". Don't miss the cathedral with its unique nave, thesecond widest in Europe, the best preserved medieval roofs in the south of France and the consuls' house with its unique sculptures.
