A former Neolithic site, occupied by the Gallo-Romans and then the Merovingians, Mazeres became a Bastide in 1253 by a deed signed between the Count of Foix and the monastery of Boulbonne. It is there that the counts of Foix installed their residence and built their castle, which is now totally destroyed. Mazeres was also famous for the cultivation of pastel, and became a major commercial center for the manufacture of textiles. Today, the Ardouin hotel bears witness to this period. Built in the 16th century, a magnificent staircase will lead you to a watchtower from which you can admire the town, and its cellars contain ancient remains.
