A peaceful enclave in the Ariège Pyrenees, the canton of Massat is a pivotal region between the Couserans and the Pays de Foix. The region was inhabited as early as prehistoric times, as evidenced by the numerous remains found (81 figures from the Magdalenian period) in the Ker cave. In Massat, a magnificent octagonal bell tower of sixty meters high dominates the village, built by the same worker who worked on that of the cathedral of Mirepoix. The architectural heritage of the commune includes two buildings protected by the historical monuments, the church of the Nativity of the Virgin (in 1985) and the grotto of Ker (in 1974).
