With a surface area of 9,783 hectares for less than 336 inhabitants, the commune of Solferino was officially created in 1863 by Napoleon III, from a large estate taken from six neighbouring communes, and named Solferino to commemorate the victory of 1859 in the Italian village of the same name. The church of Sainte-Eugénie, which dates from 1860, perpetuates the name of the empress as in Eugénie-les-Bains. A special feature of this commune is that the identical houses and cottages, still visible today, were reserved at the time for Napoleon III's craftsmen and farm workers.
