At the confluence of three rivers, the Oriège, Ariège and Lauze, stands the pretty town of Ax les Thermes. Its origins date back to the dawn of time, when the Romans came to enjoy the benefits of the thermal waters, renowned for their curative qualities and relaxing warmth. No fewer than 60 springs criss-cross the town's subsoil. Some emerge in the open air at the bend in the road. Watch out for burns! The Bassin des Ladres, built by Louis IX, is well worth a detour for a relaxing break. The town is surrounded by mountains, and the roads will take you to some excellent ski resorts.
