Neufchâteau, nicknamed Novo Castro (city of passage), had its heyday in the Middle Ages thanks to its many commercial activities. But the ravages of the Thirty Years' War heralded the town's decline. The people of Neufchâteau are determined to turn the town into a tourist attraction, thanks in particular to the rehabilitation of its old town center and the enhancement of its historical heritage. The church of Saint-Christophe is home to a masterpiece that is unique in Europe: the Wiriot chapel, with its airy vaulting and hanging key ribs.
