From the top of a promontory, the bastide town of Saint-Justin dominates the Douze river and the surrounding area. In 1280, Viscountess Constance de Marsan signed a deed of partition with the Knights Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem (later the Order of Malta), founding the bastide of Saint-Justin without the authorization of their suzerain, the Duke of Aquitaine and King of England. The three octagonal towers, the sentry walk along the ramparts and the curious prison bear witness to this warlike past. A battling destiny shared with its neighbor and long-time rival Labastide-d'Armagnac. Today, flowers have replaced cannons!
