The name Cornimont comes from a legend: Charlemagne is said to have lost or given away an auroch horn while hunting (hence the village's former name, Cornemont). In his time, the area was mostly made up of mixed forests and meadows. It was around the 12th century that the first farmers and stockbreeders from Alsace settled and populated the surrounding area. The town is still marked by its industrial and textile past. Cornimont is just 25 km from Remiremont and 20 km from Gérardmer. Its highest point is the Grand Ventron, which reaches an altitude of 1,205 meters.
