The name Pontonx probably comes from the Latin pontones, a boat bridge built over the Adour to cross the river. In the past, Pontonx-sur-l'Adour was also the site of a boat port that carried river traffic to Bayonne. Pontonx was also the site of one of the first five airfields created in France at the start of the aviation era. Future pilots had to fly to Pontonx and back from Pau to obtain their license. Worth a look: the two churches, Sainte-Eugénie and Saint-Caprais. The horseshoe-shaped neo-Moorish arena is almost 110 years old. They are used as an auditorium.
