The village of Montaut dates back to medieval times. However, it is known from flint finds, artefacts and remains of settlements that it was occupied as early as prehistoric times. Built on high ground, as its name suggests(Mons Altus, high hill), Montaut was probably intended to control the ridge road overlooking the course of the Gabas. In the 16th century, Montaut was an important stronghold. Not to be missed: the Porte du Bourg gateway, a picturesque feature of the village, and the 14th-century church of Saint-Catherine. The Montaut bullring is a pretty oval Spanish-style concrete arena used for Landes races.
