In the Middle Ages, monks from the Saint-Sever abbey settled in Mimizan and founded a priory, which became the center of a sauveté, a place of asylum for the protection of the weak. Listed as a Monument Historique, five boundary markers can still be seen. Awarded the "Ville Fleurie 4 fleurs" label, the commune of Mimizan is now divided between Mimizan-Bourg and Mimizan-Plage. The "Ailes" monument, erected at the entrance to the beach of the same name, commemorates the first French crossing between America and Europe by aviators Assolant, Lotti and Lefèvre, who landed at Mimizan on June 16, 1929.
