Before the French Revolution, Lit-et-Mixe was made up of two distinct communes. Lit, meaning shore or littoral, was a very marshy coastal village. Further south, Mixe was an ancient military post on one of the main roads of the Roman Empire. The commune was created for economic and administrative reasons. In the Middle Ages, the village was a stopover on the route to Santiago de Compostela. Today, it's a pretty village on the edge of a vast pine forest, bordered by 11 kilometers of ocean coastline. Don't miss a visit to the Musée des Vieilles Landes (Old Landes Museum), retracing life between 1850 and 1950.
