The highest point in the region, the Butte de Montfaucon was a highly coveted strategic site during the Great War. Destroyed and then occupied by the Germans, who used it as a formidable observatory, the town was retaken in September 1918 thanks to the joint actions of the5th US Corps and the 505th French Regiment. Its American monument, erected in 1937 in memory of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, is famous the world over. While you're here, why not take a romantic break and visit the poetic remains of the 12th-century collegiate church of Saint-Germain, demolished along with the old village during the fighting of 14-18.
