Situated on a spur overlooking the River Gaves, the bastide town of Hastingues was founded in 1289 by John de Hastings, seneschal of Gascony representing Edward I, King of England and Duke of Aquitaine. The site is an ancient Roman oppidum. Hastingues was built to defend the port of Bayonne, regroup a population at risk and reinforce the power and authority of the English king. Hastingues remained English until 1451. The town has preserved its 14th-century fortified gateway and some lovely houses. In the heart of the countryside, the 12th-century Abbey of Arthous is home to the Musée départemental d'Archéologie, where objects from Landes excavations are on display.
