Crossed by the Louts, a small tributary of the Adour, "the Pearl of Chalosse" grew up around its chair and armchair industry, as well as around the tomb of Saint Girons in the crypt that bears his name. During the Second World War, Hagetmau became a parachute drop zone for supplies destined for the Landes maquis. This historical episode is featured in Joseph Joffo's novel Un sac de billes. In 2012, the town was voted "France's sportiest town" by L'Equipe newspaper. Hagetmau has been awarded the "Terre de Jeux 2024" label by the Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
