The town's origins lie in an ancient Roman camp, which became a bastide around 1224. Some remains, including the miraculous Saint-Leu fountain, are still visible. Château Saint-Jean-de-la-Castelle, a former 6th-century Benedictine abbey, is now privately owned. Classified as a historic monument, Château de Lau is built on ancient 14th-century ramparts. Antoine de Castelnau, grand chamberlain to Louis XI, drew inspiration from his trip to the Brussels area to create a Flemish-influenced château. Nearby, the impressive Lourden dam, with 5 millionm3 of water, replenishes the Adour during low-water periods.
