This small Chalosse village has become famous for its prehistoric remains. The Brassempouy site comprises four caves: the Grotte du Pape, the Grotte des Hyènes, the Galerie du Mégacéros and the Shelter Dubalen. It was in the Grotte du Pape in 1894 that the famous sculpture of the Dame de Brassempouy was discovered, known as the oldest artistic representation of a human face. Dating from the Upper Paleolithic, between 29,000 and 22,000 years ago, it is believed to be the oldest realistic portrait in the history of art! But you can discover many other remains discovered on site in the PrehistoSite.
