Rochechouart is a picturesque, formerly fortified town with a 13th-, 15th- and 19th-century castle built on a rocky spur of meteorite breccia. In fact, 214 million years ago, a meteorite one-and-a-half kilometers in diameter ended its journey here, travelling at 72,000 km/h. The impact crater (an astrobleme) extends over a diameter of 20 kilometers, where the towns and villages around Rochechouart are located today. The fusion of meteorite and rock has given rise to unique stones: impact breccias. Their varied hues give the region's buildings a distinctive identity.
