Situated in the heart of the Millevaches Natural Park, Peyrat-le-Château is undoubtedly one of the oldest villages in Limousin. Successively named through the ages Peyrat-le-Fort, Peyrat-la-Montagne and Peyrat-le-Château, the town was devastated in the 12th century and only two buildings from this period remain, then rebuilt in the 15th century: the church of Saint-Martin and the Square Tower, or Tour-porte, which has been made the centerpiece of the defensive system redesigned enclosure. The Tourist Office will provide you with a free leaflet allowing you to make a free one-hour tour of the streets and squares of the village.
