On June 10, 1944, a Waffen SS unit of the Das Reich division rounded up the villagers in the square at Oradour-sur-Glane, on the pretext of carrying out an identity check. In a single afternoon, 642 people - men, women and children - were massacred by gunfire. Only 5 men and one woman escaped. To preserve the memory of this tragedy, the martyred village has remained unchanged since 1944. The ruins of houses, shops and other buildings, railways and car wrecks lie in the path of visitors, who can see the bullet holes, notably on the walls of the church: an essential form of remembrance tourism.
