OLD CONVENTS AND CHURCH
Before being one of the most beautiful villages in France, Mortemart was a village with a religious vocation, on the initiative of one of its children, Cardinal Gauvain (Gauvin for some). In 1330, he built three monasteries, the Carmelites Monastery, the Augustins and the Des. It lasted only a century, it even ignores its location. The Couvent convent housed a College (the current premises of the town hall). It was eight years ago and the education of the young Canons lasted for up to twenty years. His former chapel became the church of the village. Among other things, she exhibits grivoises sculptures that are characters of the time and fantastic animals. You can see a hare playing the bagpipe. The convent of the Carmelites hosted and cared for pilgrims and indigent people. It is still imposing with its beautiful entrance gate and square towers on both sides of the facade. It features two monumental staircases (one is accessible), wall paintings in the arched passage of entrance, walls and painted ceilings. There are artists workshops installed there.
