ROMANESQUE CHURCH AND MONKS' CEMETERY
Romanesque church built in the 11th century, which contains the tomb of Saint Geoffroy in Le Chalard
The Romanesque church of the Assumption, built in the 11th century, contains the tomb of Saint Geoffroy, its founder. In a niche, to the right of a magnificent Gothic sideboard, is his reliquary shrine. One can also admire a Pietà and discover an underground chapel decorated with frescoes. At the head of the church, the monks' cemetery contains more than eighty tombstones from the 12th and 15th centuries, carved in granite and serpentine (a kind of local marble). The church-shaped tombs are the most numerous. Their sculptures represent tiles or rafters, Romanesque arches of crosses, craftsmen's tools (weaver's shuttle, hammer and pliers, axe...) representing the trades of the deceased. Guided tours for individuals in the summer, for groups all year round, on request at the tourist office.
