Eymoutiers is an old walled city built on the left bank of the Vienne and is labelled "Petite Cité de caractère", "Station Verte" and "Station Pêche". It is home to the contemporary works of the local painter Paul Rebeyrolle. The name, Eymoutiers, "Ayen Moustiers", the monastery at the foot of the hill, sums up its monastic origins in one word. Indeed, originally, the town developed around the collegiate church built from the 11th to the 15th century. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the town became a renowned tannery centre. This industry has now disappeared, but it has left its mark on the name of its inhabitants, the Pelauds (in langue d'oc "he who tans") and on the architecture of the houses, which are equipped with lofts for drying the hides. You will be able to see the house of the Master Tanner on the banks of the Vienne river as well as other old buildings with remarkable architectural elements.
