This castle is an essential stop on the road of Richard the Lionheart

The impressive remains of this castle testify to the power of its owners who all belonged to eminent families: the Sully, d'Albret, Borgia and finally the Bourbon-Busset then the Bourbon-Châlus who owned it from 1535 to 1994. The castle comprises a part of the dwelling with a tower, a keep, the remains of an 11th century chapel and a 17th century main building. This castle of Châlus-Chabrol is an essential stop on the road to Richard the Lionheart, because it is here that the latter died in 1199, hit by a crossbow shot. Opposite him, the castle of Châlus-Maulmont, or Tour du Fort, was built in the 13th century. The castle is private and open to the public all year round.
