The Monts de Châlus, the highest mountains in the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin, are the watershed between the Loire, Garonne and Charente basins. The heritage of this secret territory, inhabited since Neolithic times, bears witness to the activities of yesteryear: forges, mills, bread ovens, clédiers (stone buildings, often oval in shape, used to store chestnuts), good fountains... The chestnut forests, which have been the source of prosperity for loggers and charcoal burners since the 16th century, have remained at the heart of human activity. In Châlus, you'll find La Maison du Châtaignier, entirely dedicated to the fruit.
