At the confluence of the Vézère and Loyre rivers, between Brive and Objat, Varetz has been shaped by two personalities: Baron Henry de Jouvenel, whose family owned Château Castel-Novel - today a luxury hotel and gourmet restaurant - and his wife, writer Colette, who gave birth to her only daughter on these lands. For the record, Colette's gardens are home to more than 1,000 species of plants, immersing us in the artist's world. Most of the houses in the village date from the 17th century, and are typical of the region with their pinkish-red stone walls and slate roofs.
