Old abbey church of Limousin Romanesque style, with a unique crypt in Bas-Limousin, an ambulatory and a chapel
Located at the top of the spur, the former Benedictine abbey church is a major witness of Romanesque art in Limousin, classified as a Historic Monument in 1840. Because of the slope, its construction took place in two phases. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the plan of the church, choir, pillars, apse, transept, nave and bell tower. The western façade and the fortified tower were built in the 13th and 14th centuries. The cleared surroundings of the building allow us to appreciate the remarkable bell tower with gables, typically Limousin, rising from a square base over three floors to a fourth octagonal level. The crypt, unique in its age, is composed of a main circular room open on 5 barrel vaults allowing the circulation towards the ambulatory. The building also has superb 19th century stained glass windows and interesting sculpted decorations.
