This fortified town, nestled in a meander of the Vézère, is nicknamed the "Pearl of the Limousin". The Gauls occupied Uzerche. Then, in the 10th century, its development took place around a radiating Benedictine abbey. The Saint-Pierre abbey church remains a major witness of the Limousin Romanesque art with its typical octagonal bell tower. The city, bristling with towers, full of vaulted passages, with its medieval residences looking like small castles, offers a remarkable and rare architectural ensemble, hence the proverb "Who has a house in Uzerche has a castle in Limousin". There are other reasons to stop off here, notably with the cultural eco-neighbourhood of the paper mill.
