MUSEUM OF THE CLOISTER OF TULLE ANDRÉ MAZEYRIE
Museum housing collections of archaeology, ethnohistory and drawings by Gaston Vuillier on witchcraft in Bas-Limousin
This museum is installed in the cloister of the former abbey of Saint-Martin de Tulle. It houses collections of archaeology, ethnohistory and drawings by Gaston Vuillier on the customs and practices of witchcraft in Bas-Limousin in the 19th century. Tools, weapons and firebacks bear witness to the know-how of the "nez-noirs" of the arms factory. Throughout the rooms, engravings showing the appearance of the town in the Middle Ages plunges the visitor into the history of the Tulle region. Events of national importance are evoked, such as the Lafarge trial of 1840 at the town court and the tragic episode of June 7, 8 and 9, 1944 of the Tulle hanged men. Also to be seen is a collection of Tulle stitch lace, earthenware, furniture, religious art and the space reserved for the accordion, a unique collection in France comprising exceptional pieces from the 19th century. In the cloister, don't miss the mural paintings (14th century) of the chapter house as well as the recumbents of Abbot Bernard de Ventadour and the Limousin popes.
