It's one of the oldest towns in the Landes! Its origins are ancient, as the Celtic name Atura suggests. In 56 BC, it was the site of a battle between Crassus and Pompey, before being renamed Vicus Julli and ravaged by the Vandals, Alans and Suevi. In the5th century, the Visigoths founded their kingdom, and the town benefited from this. Despite conflicts over the centuries, the town rose again. Aire is made up of 2 main districts: the lower town along the river and the Mas district with its superb panoramic views. Aire has a rich prehistoric, ancient and medieval heritage. It's also the foie gras capital of the Landes!
